Group Therapy

What is group counseling?

When you’re considering counseling, different options are available. One option is group counseling. Depending on the nature of your problem, group counseling is ideal for addressing your concerns and making positive changes in your life. It provides a safe space to process things in the context of others.

Groups are usually formed around common issues. This helps clients realize they are not alone in their struggles.

Groups can be beneficial for a wide range of problems and people.

Some people attend individual therapy in addition to groups, while others participate in groups only.

There are different kinds of groups.

Many groups are designed around a common challenge and target a specific problem such as depression, panic disorder, social anxiety, domestic violence, abuse and trauma, or substance abuse. Other groups focus more generally on improving social skills, helping people deal with a range of issues such as anger, shyness, loneliness and low self-esteem.

What’s special about groups?

Groups provide a safe place to discuss the challenges that you are currently facing. You benefit from the support of others who are experiencing similar problems and/or have gone through and overcome similar situations.

Group participants act as a support network and a sounding board. Other group members frequently help you come up with new ideas for improving a difficult situation or make life changes and act as accountability partners along the way.

Group dynamics help you put your own problems in perspective. Groups provide members the opportunity to deepen their level of self-awareness, relate to others with common issues, increase understanding, and develop new ways of coping. Groups can make self-exploration easier.

It is difficult to speak out about mental health difficulties. You feel like you are the only one struggling…until you are not! Groups help you acquire tools for self-empowerment. Members have the opportunity to discuss struggles and joys, set boundaries and find new ways of coping.
